What is this course about?

The ability to communicate clearly, consistently, and with authenticity defines strong leaders. Anyone can create a vision or have ideas for improving situations, but without the ability to resonate with people and generate the buy-in of others, no progress is made. This course provides the skills to create and apply your own communication style in a way that best represents you.

The content of this course is based on two strands of behavioral science research:

  • Impression Management: Strategies and skills people use to manage the impression they seek to create in order to achieve desired outcomes. This includes personal values, message consistency and congruity, and personal branding.
  • Self-presentation: The knowledge base for tactics and techniques that people use to project themselves in their social interactions. This includes personal identity, emotional intelligence, vocal expression, charisma, presence, impact and confidence.

During this course, you will learn how to:

  • Apply an outcome-focused communications model to become more strategic in your approach to leadership communications
  • Build trust and foster the engagement of others by being consistent and explicit with your leadership voice
  • Gain the buy-in of others and motivate them to achieve desired outcomes
  • Create a clear vision and objectives to sustain you during difficult situations
  • Practice self-presentation tactics for a variety of communication situations, including vocal, listening, emotional intelligence, nonverbal and others

Who will benefit from this course?

This course is appropriate for anyone interested in improving their leadership communication skills. Experienced managers, new managers, and those looking to become mangers will find useful information throughout this course that will improve their communication skills as a leader and manager.

What background do I need?

No specific background is required to take this course. Some previous experience in a leadership role is helpful.

How is this course structured?

The course assumes attendees have leadership communication challenges on which they would like to work. It uses a case study approach built around the personal experiences of the attendees to help attendees build personalized solutions. Attendees are expected to come to the course with specific leadership challenges on which they would like to work.

Why is it important to be conscious of my leadership voice?

Eighty percent of leadership is communication. A person's leadership "voice" is the style he or she uses to communicate information. The way in which you use your voice determines how others see you and how they respond to you.

Conveying a consistent, authentic leadership voice that truly represents who you are and what you stand for is an important leadership trait-one that defines whether or not you will be a successful leader.

Applying the skills from this course enables you to strengthen your leadership style and convey consistent messages to those around you.
